Blood Pressure Readings
Would you expect blood pressure readings in all the major arteries to be the same? Explain your answer.?
This is Biology 12 blood pressure question and I’m not sure if my answer is right. I think the answer is no, because the arteries are different sizes and and some take blood from the heart to body parts close to the heart well others take blood to parts of the body that are located further from the heart. Therefore, blood pressure would vary in the arteries. Can someone please check my answer or add onto it? Thank you!
The answer is, as you said, no. The reason is that as blood passes through the arteries, the branching spreads the blood out more and in doing so, reduces the pressure.
The pressure is also reduced by the resistance to the blood flowing created by the artery walls.
Here is an example. By the time the blood has flowed through the arteries, arterioles and comes out of the capillaries, the pressure is almost zero. Due to the BP being almost zero, in order to maintain the direction of the flow of blood, veins must have one way valves.
